California Community Colleges


Consisting of 112 schools in 72 districts, California boasts the second largest higher education system in the world offering programs to more than 2.4 million students a year. Created in 1967 the California Community College System offers students a variety of programs and curriculum designed to empower, engage, and further a student's career and education future.

California's community college

California's community college program is run by the local public school system. The design and intent of California's community college program is to offer students an opportunity to gain a valuable educational foundation. This foundation can consist of general education allowing students to progress in their chosen degree program or much needed vocational training programs.

Flexibility

One of the greatest advantages to California's community college is its offer of inexpensive tuition and flexibility. California dedicates enormous portions of its state budget to education and works to keep higher education accessible to minorities, undocumented immigrants, and those in lower income brackets. Currently California's tuition is set at $46 a credit unit

California's community college offers an advantage to its students. Due to the flexible nature of the individual program students can maintain a full or part time job while attending classes. As programs are developed many of California's community colleges are turning to online courses to offer greater flexibility for the student and for the instructors.

Programs

California's community colleges offer a diverse array of programs. Due to California's unique position economically, agriculturally, and within industry community colleges offer programs that cater to the needs of the community. Courses in IT, criminal justice, and agriculture are common throughout California community colleges. Much needed programs in the medical field are also prominent.

California has adapted its programs to assist the student to succeed within their program. English as a Second Language (ESL) programs are prominent in California's community colleges. Financial aid and a variety of other student programs are implemented to give students every opportunity for success.

California community colleges and the future

California structures its budget to favor education. Despite the turbulent economic times and slashing budget cuts California continues to maintain education as a top priority. Because of this vision California community colleges face a certain future. Tuition costs may rise and fall but the continued existence of California's community college is all but certain.
